However, for most people, digestive issues have always been a common struggle when traveling that it would, most often than not, affect the travel experience in a not so pleasing way. This, according to Dr. Shilpa Ravella, a gastroenterologist,  can be inevitable as travel can be hectic that you may not have your normal diet available and you tend to overeat; leaving you an upset stomach.

In order to avoid these issues and have the best travel experience, you must keep your stomach healthy. Here are simple ways to maintain a healthy and calm gut while traveling.

Don’t overeat

Traveling isn’t complete without food trip and not digging into every meal served feels like the trip isn’t also complete, so you indulge. But as you let yourself enjoy every food, it is important not to overeat as it stretches the stomach and “people who overeat are 10 times more likely to need emergency medical attention for food obstruction,” Healthline reported.

Eat plenty of fiber

Eating foods rich in fiber like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and beans, maintains your bowel movement; preventing risk of  bad stomach. It is also important to avoid processed foods during the trip. You may opt to get groceries from the local stores or markets to give your stomach a rest from all the processed food you’ve eaten during the trip.

Keep hydrated

Drinking a lot of water may prevent possibilities of having an upset stomach but make sure that the water you’re drinking is safe. According to experts, dehydration is a major cause of constipation, so keep hydrated. It is also important to note that over consumption of drinks that contain a lot of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol can lead to unwanted stomach issues, so you might want to avoid this too.

If you need to go to the bathroom, then go

Ignoring the urge to use the bathroom, experts say, can lead to constipation and discomfort. So, you must not ignore the urge of using the washroom. Another important thing that must be practiced when traveling is: washing your hands, especially before eating, to take away germs.

Always carry your medications

It’s better to be ready than sorry, right? It is advisable to carry with you the over-the-counter medicines you have to help you with either heartburn or upset stomach while exploring your destination. That way you won’t be taking the time you should be using to roam around and enjoy just to buy yourself a medicine in a nearby pharmacy.
