A Filipino dermatologist had finally uncovered the reason behind this strange thing, especially for Filipinos who had to deal with dark lips over a myth pointing that the only culprit is sm0king.

Jean Marquez, a dermatologist, revealed in a local medical show that dark lips can be the result of the use of a soap with excessive chemical and too much sun exposure, among others.

“Sometimes they use soap with excessive chemical. Since our skin on the lip area is thin, it can be irritated easily and when it is exposed to sun, it also darkens,” Marquez said in Filipino. “It’s like our skin, so sometimes we just recommend them to use mild soap and lip balm or moisturizer with sun protection formula.”

Aside from soap and sun exposure, hyperpigmentation, a condition related to sun exposure which can affect almost any area of the body, including lips, can be among the reasons behind dark lips.

According to a report by Healthline, dehydration; allergic reactions to toothpaste, lipstick, etc.; too much caffeine; and lip sucking can cause hyperpigmentation that can affect even the lips. It was noted that these causes “can be addressed by lifestyle changes such as wearing sunscreen, limiting caffeine intake, or changing toothpaste or brands.”

There are also some home remedies to lighten your lips but experts underscored that you must consult to your doctor first before deciding to use a home remedy.
