The Nordic diet focuses on locally sourced foods in the Nordic countries, namely Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It was created in 2004 by scientists, nutritionists and chefs who wanted to address the growing obesity rates and unsustainable practices in these countries.

Compared with the average Western diet, the Nordic diet contains less sugar and fat, and has twice the fiber and seafood.

In a study presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC), researchers found that following the Nordic Prudent Dietary Pattern (NPDP) high in poultry, fish, root vegetables, vegetables and fruits can reduce cognitive decline.
Is the Nordic diet ideal for weight loss?
For those who want to lose weight, adopting the Nordic diet may result in short-term weight loss, even without calorie restrictions.
Studies, however, suggest that those who lost weight after adopting the Nordic diet may regain their weight over time. They may gradually regain their weight within one to two years.
Researchers said that strict compliance to the diet and physical exercise could be key to better weight management.
“NND provides higher satisfaction, and body weight regain is reduced with higher compliance with New Nordic Diet and increased physical activity,” researchers of a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition wrote.
