Your nails can offer you a glimpse of what happens inside your body; from minor vitamin deficiencies to a more serious health condition.

Below are some warning signs that could indicate you need to see a medical professional to assess you and give you proper diagnosis:

Brown Vertical Stripe On The Nail

A brown vertical stripe on your nail could be a sign of melanoma. While this type of skin cancer tends to show up as a mole or dark spot, it may also start in the nail. About 1 percent of melanomas in Caucausians occur in the nail, but the rate among African-Americans is higher. Twenty percent of melanomas in this population occur in the nail.

Brittle Nails

Brittle nails could indicate a poor diet. In people who are malnourished or lack certain nutrients, their body does not produce the materials needed to make good and strong nails. Brittle nails, for instance, can indicate iron deficiency anemia. This is the reason why people with eating problems usually have brittle nails.

Discolored Nails

Nails should have a healthy pink color and a different shade could indicate a problem. Green nails can indicate a severe fungal nail infection, nail psoriasis, jaundice and even tuberculosis. Nails that turn brown may indicate you are malnourished or have thyroid disease.

Spoon Nails

Koilonychia is a condition that causes the nails to become soft and appear scooped out like a spoon. The symptom may indicate a liver condition called hemochromatosis, which occurs when too much iron is produced in your system. Spoon nails may also be a sign of hypothyroidism.

Loose Nails

Loose nails that are not caused by injury could indicate fungal nail infection, excess protein in the blood, or poor blood circulation. In some cases, severe allergies to some antibiotics can cause nails to loosen from the nail bed.

So make sure to take good care of yourself and to check your nails regularly.
