- There are natural remedies that can make scars less noticeable
- Applying aloe vera directly to the wound can reduce inflammation and scar tissue size
- Honey can speed up wound healing, which can reduce the potential for scarring
Scars can be unsightly, but there are natural remedies that can purportedly speed up the lightening process of scars in your skin and make them less noticeable.
Honey has numerous medicinal purposes such as for treating burns and wounds. Research also suggests it can speed up wound healing, which can reduce the potential for scarring.
A 2015 review of studies of using honey for wounds found evidence suggesting that these golden liquid produced by bees can heal partial thickness burns more quickly compared with conventional treatment. Honey also heals infected postoperative wounds more quickly than antiseptics and gauze. Researchers attribute these to the antibacterial property of honey.
Aloe vera also helps in the healing process of wounds. It also appears to be beneficial for those who want to avoid ugly scars. Findings of a study published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery found that applying aloe vera directly to the wound can reduce inflammation and scar tissue size.
One study found that children with surgical scars who used vitamin E three times a day did not develop keloids, or extra scar tissue over the wound. Research on how vitamin E can heal scars, however, remain inconclusive, but it is possible that taking vitamin E supplements or consuming food rich in vitamin E can help the body heal in other ways.
Other Natural Remedies
Other natural products recommended for treating scars include lemon juice, supposedly because of its bleaching actions that can help to fade dark discoloration in the skin; baking soda, which can be used as an exfoliant; cucumber, and apple cider vinegar.
These home remedies, however, have not yet been sufficiently proven as safe and effective in removing scars, so if you are considering trying any of these alternative treatments, make sure to consult with a skin expert.
