Wearing a necktie may prove to be a disaster when it comes to productivity. It sounds weird, but these articles of clothing just may be an unnoticed weakness among workers in almost any industry.
Let us list down the two important reasons why you may want to stop wearing neckties at work:
Blood Flow To The Head
A 2018 Neuroradiology journal study conducted by the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Germany revealed that wearing a necktie may disrupt the
blood flow to one’s head – which may be detrimental to overall productivity.
Thirty men were recruited to be part of the study and 15 were randomly selected to wear neckties. The neckties were
tied using the Windsor knot method. The Windsor knot was done in such a way to have a slight tension when wrapped around the neck
The result? The recruited men wearing neckties were recorded to have 7.5 percent less cerebral
blood flow (CBF) towards their brains. When asked to loosen the neckties, the CBF dropped to 5.7 percent.
The CBF difference may prove to be fatal among workers experiencing high
bloo d pressure.
Blinded By The Necktie
Another study published by researchers in the Journal of Ophthalmology in 2003 also associates neckties to another health hazard: blin
The study revealed that wearing tight neckties may result in increased intraocular pressure, or increased fluid tension in one’s eyes. This type of pressure can lead to
glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. The chances of getting glaucoma increases, especially if one is required to wear neckties on a daily basis.
Knowing the dangers of wearing a necktie, should you continue wearing neckties at work? Now we know why some of the world’s top executives including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg are opting to wear shirts. Unfortunately, many will have to keep wearing neckties due to the nature of their work.
