We all have a list of food we just can’t take. And sometimes, we end up not outgrowing them that no matter how nutritious they are, we won’t bother eating it, not even having a taste of it.

Sometimes traumatic experience or ridiculous recipes are to blame for the lingering distaste for these foods. But maybe it’s about time to explore some of these to get out of your comfort zone and reap health benefits in the process.

Here are some nutritious foods that most people hate today but have vast health benefits.

Durian fruit

Durian is considered as a stand-out because of its unique odor described by many as “stinky.”

But behind it being smelly, it is incredibly nutritious. In fact, it is one of the most nutritious fruits in the world as it contains an enormous set of vitamins and  healthy plant compounds such as anthocyanins, carotenoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids.

Some of its wonders are reducing cancer risk, infection, and heart disease. It also lowers blood sugar.

Egg Fruit (Chesa)

The taste of this tropical fruit, which is also called canistel, is somewhat reminiscent of a mashed sweet potato but people don’t find its sweetness as outstandingly delectable as some other fruits. Perhaps the consistency of the meat is the one to blame.

Why people should eat it —  Egg fruits contain calories but if taken in moderate amounts, it can bring surprising health benefits to the body. It is an excellent immunity booster due to its vitamin C properties. It is also good for the eyes, for digestion, and can prevent risks of diabetes, osteoarthritis, cough and flu, arthritis, and anemia.

Ampalaya (Bitter Gourd)

Why do some people hate it? Obviously, because of its unique bitter taste.

Why people should eat it –  By now, we already know ampalaya’s success story from being a simple bitter vegetable to becoming one of the most sought-after ingredients in producing diet supplements that help fight diabetes. Ampalaya naturally contains flavonoids and alkaloids that stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin and enables the body utilize the excessive amounts of sugar in the blood. In addition to this, ampalaya leaves is famous for effectively treating digestion problems, sterility in women, parasitism and certain types of skin diseases.

Celery

It’s crunchy and tasty but people, especially kids, won’t dare eat it as its taste is not that appealing to the taste buds.

Why people should eat it –  Celery is a rich source of important antioxidants; vitamins A, K, and C; and minerals like potassium, folate,  magnesium, iron, and sodium. It can also help reduce inflammation which is linked to many illnesses. It can also lower blood pressure and is a perfect addition to soups and dishes that can cover up its taste and make the whole meal more flavorful.

Spinach

While it is called a “super food,” many find it far from being an enticing and mouth-watering food. Some even describe its taste as something that resembles a “soggy metal,” a description that has forced people to shy away from this wonderful vegetable.

Spinach is a good source of Vitamin A and beta-carotene, thus it is good for eye sight. It is also a great source of Vitamin C, iron, and fiber, making it a food that is good for the skin, digestion, and immune system.
